JOSHUA SPRINGS PARK
& PRESERVE
A few weeks ago, we
blogged about Trails in Boerne that would take you all around the City
exploring sites and nature. Now we would like to take you a little further
away, but not too far. The closest nature park outside of Boerne is Joshua Springs Park & Preserve. Located about 8.5 miles outside of Boerne
on FM 289 in Comfort is 365 acres of natural area for you to enjoy. Ring
Mountain sits approximately in the middle and rises above the area. At the
top of Ring Mountain is the original homestead for the area which can be rented
for events.
There are extensive natural surface trails for
walking. Be prepared because there are some ascents that might be a
little difficult for some. You will find ADA approved trails that wind
though the active recreation area where you can enjoy views of Joshua Creek
Lake stocked and ready for some fishing.
Birding is another
activity you can enjoy as you walk along the trails. Two chimney swift
towers and 18 nest boxes for sheltering migrating Easter Bluebirds and other
native Texas species help bring in our feathered friends.
Covered and shaded picnic tables sit along the banks of the lake waiting
for you to enjoy. Pavilions are also available for birthday parties or any
special time with reservations. There are two play areas for the younger ones.
KREUTZBERG CANYON NATURAL AREA
The Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area is located off of Kreutzberg Road on Mark Twain Drive. With over 117 acres along the Guadalupe River and three miles of trails, this is a perfect birding place. On the 3rd Tuesday at 8 a.m. bring your water and binoculars to help with the bird census. Three blinds offer opportunities to watch the birds, butterflies and wildlife.
As you hike along the trails, you can choose from the Fossil Ridge Loop, The North and South Woodland Loop or the River Loop. Take the River loop and bring along a picnic to enjoy along the Guadalupe. Also located within the Natural Area is the Kronkosky Interpretive Garden where you can find native and adapted plants and learn about those as well as fossils, animals and more. Feel free to bring your puppies!
James Kiehl River Bend Park
A 25 acre natural area located next to the Guadalupe River in Comfort, Texas. The park is named after Army Spc. James Kiehl and is also in memory of the Kendall County Servicemen and women who have given their lives for our country.
The 1.5 miles of multi-use trails are fun for exercise or nature study. The Pecan Loop passes under native pecans, mesquites and cedar elms and follows 500 feet of the historic San Antonio & Aransas Pass rail bed. The Prairie Trail passes the chimney swift towers and bluebird trail. The River Loop leads you down where you will see massive bald cypress trees.
Along the way you will see “critter condos” providing a habitat for insects, lizards, rabbits and birds.
